The Faculty of Design and Arts, founded in 2001, is distinguished by its innovative approach to the structure of education. The venues in Venice and Treviso host three three-year undergraduate programs (Industrial Design, Visual Arts and Theatre, and Fashion Design), four graduate degree programs (Industrial Product Design, Visual and Multi-media Communications, Design and Production of Visual Arts and Theatre Science and Techniques) and a first-level masters degree in medical design. Directed by Marco De Michelis, its organization is based on two distinct educational processes: the experimental workshops, in which projects are developed under the guidance of world-renowned designers, graphic designers, artists, directors, and set designers, and the theoretical-critical courses, held by some of the most eminent representatives of the disciplines involving the theory and history of industrial design, of communication and artistic production, science and technique, in particular computer techniques.

Teachers currently include Giovanni Anceschi, Monica Bolzoni, Michael Burke, Giorgio Camuffo, Aldo Cibic, Judith Clark, Gillian Crampton Smith, Daniele Del Giudice, Michele De Lucchi, Paolo Fabbri, Bruce Fifield, Angelo Figus, Maria Luisa Frisa, Mona Hatoun, Joseph Kosuth, Walter Le Moli, Tomàs Maldonado, Alberto Meda, Hans Ulrich Obrist, Jorge Orta, Pierluigi Pizzi, Luca Ronconi, Tobia Scarpa, Angela Vettese, among others.

The studios and theoretical courses are completed by a series of cultural activities and intensive workshops that also involve the protagonists of design from around the world. The Research Doctorate in Product and Communication Design, instituted in 2003, includes study programs in the theory of design, the relationship between design and technological innovation, the new frontiers of multimodal communication, as well as history and museology

The Faculty is part of the Università IUAV di Venezia: instituted in 1926 as the Istituto Universitario di Venezia, after 2001 the university changed its name, establishing the Departments of Territorial Planning and Design and Arts in addition to the historic Architecture School. As one of the most prestigious schools of architecture in the world, it has counted some of the major protagonists of architectural culture in Italy and in Europe among its teachers in over seventy-five years of activity: Ignazio Gardella and Giuseppe Samon�, Carlo Scarpa and Franco Albini, Bruno Zevi and Manfredo Tafuri, Giovanni Astengo and Carlo Aymonino, Aldo Rossi and Vittorio Gregotti, Francesco Dal Co and Massimo Cacciari, to name just a few.
